Abstract

In the present study, rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) seed fat and oil were evaluated for the primary skin irritation after single application in rabbits. The fat and oil were obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction of rambutan seeds at 35 MPa and 45°C. Primary irritation index (PII) of the fat and oil were determined as 0.06 and 0.17 respectively. As compared to the control group (PII = 0.0), the fat and oil showed no significant irritation toxicity. Based on the results of this study, the SC-CO2 extracted rambutan seed fat and oil would be considered as safe for contact uses. The rambutan seed fat and oil will be focused for further development in topical applications.
