Preparation of Drying Oil Encapsulated Urea-Formaldehyde for Self-repairing Coating

Abstract


This work aims to prepare natural drying oil encapsulated urea-formaldehyde microcapsules for self-repairing coating. Among of the linseed oil, tung oil and mapok oil, linseed oil gave non-cracked dried film which beneficial to corrosion prevention viewpoint. Most of the linseed oil encapsulated urea- formaldehyde microcapsules obtained at agitation rate of 250 and 500 rpm were in diameter ranges of 550-1000 um and 200-300 um respectively. High amount of formaldehyde could form high cross-linked urea-formaldehyde shell preventing oil leaking from microcapsules. Corrosion testing results indicated that self-repairing coating, prepared from obtained microcapsules, could prevent the underlying steel from deterioration better than epoxy coating without microcapsules once the coating was mechanically damaged
