Abstract

Silk and cotton fabrics were printed with natural dye from mangosteen rind and using natural thickening agent as tamarind gum. Tamarind kernel powder (TKP) and carboxymethylated tamarind gum (CTG) were used for printing paste and compared to trade tamarind gum (TTG). The printing procedures were followed the reactive printing of TNH Import and Export CO., Ltd. The colour strength and colour fastness of printed fabrics were evaluated. The obrained results indicate that: (i) the printing efficiency is governed by the performance of the thickening agents, i.e. CTG > TTG > TKP, as well as the nature of substrate, i.e. Cotton > Silk, (ii) the K/S values and colour fastness properties are determined by the type of natural dye, which extracted from mangosteen rind. The colour fastness properties are good (4/5) level, except for colour fastness to light, whose rating of was fair (3).
