Abstract

Smoking causes many health problems such as coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, respiratory illness. Smoking cessation is the important health policy. The aims of this study were to assess the rate of smoking cessation and the factors effecting smoking cessation in the Thai Health Promotion Center at Panus hospital, Chonburi Province, Thailand. Vernonia Cinerea Less. (Ya Dok Khao) significantly benefit in smoking cessation, has been listed in the Herbal National Drug Lists of Thailand since 2011. Vernonia Cinerea tea bags and clove herbal pills were dispensed to the smokers. Thunbergia laurifolia Linn.(Rang Chuet), antidote for many toxic substances and Sauna were added for heavy smokers. The 5A’s and 5R’s techniques with Quit Victoria health promotion strategies were used to encourage and support the smokers. The 349 smokers were follow-up for 5 days, 10 days, 15 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. The majority of smokers were male (91.7%), and the smokers' mean age was 41.5 years. The age of smoking initiation was ranged from 7 years to 40 years with a mean of 18.4 years. The mean duration of smoking was 22 years. The mean cigarette smoked per day was 16, and maximum was 43. The mean nicotine dependence level was 5.1 + 2.1. Results showed that after follow-up the quit ratios were 21.5%, 3.3%, 4.2%, 11.2%, 15%, and 11.2% respectively. The mean cigarette smoked per day was reduced to 8.6, 7.1, 5.3, 3.9, 2.6, 1.7, and 0.9 respectively. Cessation is greater among occasional than daily smokers (p < 0.005). There was a significant difference in the quit ratio between high and low nicotine level (p < 0.009). In conclusion, cessation interventions need to be tailored for smokers, who may differ from smoking behavior and nicotine level.
