RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OCCUPATIONAL STRESS AND CAREER GROWTH WITH ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT AMONG NURSES OF A MEDICAL COLLEGE HOSPITAL, RANGPUR, BANLADESH

Abstract


Background: This descriptive correlational study was aimed to explore the relationship between occupational stress and career growth with organizational commitment and to examine the level of the same variables among nurses in Rangpur medical college hospital in Bangladesh. Study population was from same hospital and a simple random sample of 176 nursing personnel who met the inclusion criteria was selected.

Method: A self administered questionnaire was used which was modified by the researcher based on pertinent literature. It includes four main parts; one of them was the Demographic Questionnaire, organizational commitment, occupational stress and the other one is the career growth questionnaire. The reliability of organizational commitment questionnaire yielded at .90 and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of occupational stress and career growth questionnaire were .80 and .89, respectively by a pilot study of 30 nurses from out-patient department. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.

Result: The results of the study illustrated that the total mean scores of organizational commitment was 36.31 (S.D = 4.50), occupational stress was 98.40 (S.D =13.41) and the total mean scores of career growth was 79.48 (S.D = 13.83). The study revealed that there was a moderate positive significant correlation between career growth and organizational commitment (r = .32, p < .01). Additionally, there was a low negative significant correlation between occupational stress and organizational commitment (r = -.22, p < .01).  

Conclusion: The organization should be alert with career growth activities made for the staff so that they will be loyal, have feel a strong sense of belonging and feel hard to leave the organization. Since occupational stress contributed to organizational commitment, nurses should be able to assess factor of occupational stress and give career growth opportunities in order to improve nursing performance.
